Street Lights in Carlyon Bay

Published: 18 August 2025

As you may be aware Cornwall Council has been working towards switching off street lighting in certain circumstances. Switch off and dimming will be coming to all almost all communities across Cornwall.

According to Cornwall Council there have  have been a number of examples from across the country and Europe where authorities have adopted this best practice, to save carbon, save costs and to contribute to improving the environment for nature. In Cornwall the programme began in December 2023 with phase 1 covering 10 parishes, and is now progressing to a more extensive roll-out targeting 1000 lights per month. The ‘programme’ based on lights that have been replaced by LED during the predetermined maintenance route schedule.

Cornwall Council plans to switch-off streetlighting (midnight to 5am) at the beginning of September in these areas and this includes Carlyon Bay.

There has been a careful selection process, including liaison with local police, in choosing the most appropriate streetlights to switch off.

Cornwall Council is sure that soon this will be seen as the norm, however it has asked the local Parish Councils to support this initiative and be the conduit for either requests to switch back on (in exceptional circumstances and in liaison with the police) or for further lights to be turned off which they would be happy to consider.

There is an Interactive Mapping Page that will show the exact lights that will be switch-off. Please note the mapping will not yet show switch-off for this area as the council is finalising details and arranging for the map to be amended, however this will be completed by the weekend prior to switch off. They can however give an indication based on the current review if requested.

The switch off in Carlyon Bay will be the week commencing 1 September.    If you have any queries or concerns please do not hesitate to contact streetlighting@cornwall.gov.uk.
